Viewpoint Continued from page 2 assess my personal position on this matter. Secondly in areas of conscience conscience I have always been uncomfortable about second guessing the morality of the people of Durham. I believe in democracy and that collectively the people are wise. Some have even taken umbrage with this position believing that on matters of morality the courts should take precedence over the majority view. Their theory is that the courts are enlightened and know better than the average citizen and therefore, in order for society to progress an oligarchy oligarchy of elites should decide Heart Disease when and how society must change. This is an elitist view of democracy. While it may be that society moves at a different pace than academia in areas of social evolution it still moves all the same. In fact it is a concern to me that without the involvement of the public these decisions will be increasingly regarded as not representing the common view. I think a general feeling of disrespect will unfold as courts try to usurp the power of elected elected officials and, instead of alleviating alleviating discrimination against same-sex couples, you will entrench intransigence among the people which would take us in another direction increasing discrimination. Because of this I believe all the people of Durham should share in the decision-making process. Most people I talk to believe that societal benefits like pensions, pensions, divorce rights etc. should exist for same-sex couples. This is a long way from where society was a generation ago. It is this evolutionary process that is most important and why I have chosen a process that allows everyone to have their voice heard on this veiy important issue. In conclusion watch for the upcoming householder. I hope you will mail it back to me no later than October 24th.
