Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 1,2003 - 5 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis COMMON THIEVES A nightmarish thing happened happened to me on Friday September 26th. The day started as usual with Karon Cox and myself going to work. We had a small job in Bowmanville to do- painting a couple of small washrooms in a restaurant We finished the job around noon, had lunch and then continued; on to our next errand. This took; us back to Leskaid and the home of Jeanne and G lenn Burnside. their home was a beehive of activity as they Were getting ready for a rather Iaige party the following day. My job was to roast the pig on a spit. They were so overwhelmed with my chili judging and cooking, I was hired. With the driveway being full of cars Karon parked our truck across the road at the end Allen Road at the 8th Concession. The truck was locked and we went to check on the activities. Some 15 minutes later when I went back to the truck it had been ransacked. A couple of common thieves had smashed out the passenger side window and relieved us of several several items. Among the things stolen was Karon's purse which had been hidden under the seat with over $1000 cash in it. That was more than two weeks wages which 1 had paid to her at lunch time. Thé most important things stolen were her birth certificate, certificate, social, insurance, health card mid other personal identification identification along With credit cards and hér valued engagement ring given to her by her husband husband many years ago. The few thing taken from me can easily be replaced, but not so for Karon. Since that time she has spent many hours calling about credit cards, health card, drivers license, etc. The Durham Regional Police were called at once, but it being Friday afternoon, and the police being short staffed with many calls to deal with, no one was able to respond to our call until nearly 8 o'clock, some five hours later. Little or nothing could have been done about something like this even if an officer had responded in a few minutes, the culprits would have been long gone. What I need is to have someone call and give me the names of the pair of pukes that did this. Justice will be done, that is a promise.
