» iÜÜ Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 8,2003 - Canadian Soap Box Derby South of 49° by Jeanne Burnside Who was that masked man? i Rookie of the Year 1 Last week my husband and I celebrated milestone birthdays together with a costume party under a tent. The invitation read 'The Bumsideiare turning 120! I'm the younger one even though my downtown nickname nickname is 'old lady Burnside.' We had asked people to come as a TV or movie character character from thé 50's or 70's and were thrilled with the guest list. The first to arrive were Annie with her dog Sandy and the 'Chef of the Future' from the Jackie Gleason Show. Next up was Cher with her date for the evening--Indiana Jones followed followed by Lucy and Desi with trademark drum. Ava Gardner arrived with Clark Gable and immediately danced with Thurston and Lovey from Gilligan's Island. The Blues Brothers made a big entrance and were immediately arrested by Jack Lord and Danno from Hawaii Five-0. Handcuffs were slapped on most of us by the end of the evening. Popeye & Olive Oyl flew in from New York along with Jock Ewing from Dallas. Ozzie Nelson must have left Harriet and showed up with Joanie from 'Happy Days.' Later in the evening Mary Tyler Moore arrived with her best friend 'I Dream of Jeannie' in complete harem attire. Mork returned to Earth and escorted Dale Evans sans Roy to the event. Bret Maverick came solo but was caught dancing with most of the ladies - he was hard to resist. There were several cast members from Grease and one 'flower-power' tie-dyed hippie from the 70's. Mimi from the Drew Carey Show arrived with Tom from the 'backwoods' with a very special fast growing planter! My husband was very appropriately Dennis the Menace with a top of the line sling-shot made by a neighbour's neighbour's son. Fortunately for all, tie couldn't figure out how to use it! The final guest to arrive was Columbo minus the trademark trademark cigar so her hand could be free for imbibing. Although it rained buckets all day, the sun finally did come out about 5PM and was Annie's cue to break out in song and dance with her shiny new tap shoes. Dancing was the call of the evening and I have the very smashed down lawn to prove it. The fireworks were spectacular and a real treat for the guests from New York who can't get them. Mimi and Dale carved up the pig which was perfectly roasted by Bret and Chef of the Future. All thé follow-up phone calls mentioned the pain most of us were in due to the continuous continuous kick lines we preformed throughout the evening. I smartly bought a package of four disposable cameras and now own compromising photographs photographs of all who attended. I'm not sure if it was the costumes, costumes, the people, the weather or a combination of all, but everybody decided to make this a very special fun night. Friends summed it up in an e- mail sent after their return to Connecticut--"Thanks for 20 years of pure wonderful insanity. insanity. We are happy to know you have met such great new friends in Canada!' 17* h Annual Model Railroad Show Saturday, Oct. 18,2003 -10 am to 4:30 pm Sunday, Oct. 19,2003 -10 am to 4:00 pm bowmanville high school 49 Liberty Street North, Bowmanville, Ontario * Operating Layouts 9 Static Displays 9 Vendors Adults $4 • Seniors $3 Family $8 Above, Daniel Benedictine Benedictine and his pit crew- sister Julie, pose with the hardware after a summer on the circuit.
