* Orono Weekly Times,^We^iesd^^ctoberj^^OOSj^ Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Wrong or right? I first met Skipper Cove in Pontypool. He would come here for the yearly Christmas tree harvest. He made his living living following the circuit doing piece work. Skipper came here from the Holland Marsh where he'd picked vegetables and from Pontypool he'd head south to Florida to pick oranges and swing through the U.S. down to California and back up here in the early summer to pick strawberries. He was a rather large fellow fellow over six foot five and he claimed the most money could be made by cutting and dragging dragging Christmas trees out of the field to be picked up to be sent off to sell. He had a charming personality personality and talked with a southern southern drawl although he was from North Bay. Skipper had a nice car and he and I had the good fortune to date a couple of sisters from Lindsay. We would go somewhere with the giris with strict instructions to be home by a certain time and more likely than not we never went home till the next day. This bothered me greatly but not Skipper. He would get the girls out of the car and up to the house, he always had a great alibi. The car broke down or ran out of gas, he'd say, or we got stuck or lost. He always had an excuse. He would come out with the girl's old man, put his arm around his shoulder and bring him to the car and open the trunk and get out a bottle of watermelon joy or something else. Then he would say wrong or right I did the best I could, and the old man would always agree. Skipper moved along after the tree harvest but did come back and marry one of the girls and settle down on one of his dad's farms in North Bay. That's where the next part of the story starts. He was the victim of the first home invasion I'd ever heard of. His wife and daughter daughter were visiting her family in Lindsay, and when he answered the door three masked men were there. This was his description of the home invasion. One with a small .22 caliber hand gun, one had a jack knife and the other guy had a baseball bat. They demanded money and Skip refused. The guy with the gun threatened to shoot him and Skipper rushed him. The first shot broke his thumb, and the second shot hit him in the shoulder breaking his collar bone. The next shots went into the floor and ceiling and Skipper slammed the guy into the wall knocking him unconscious. The guy with the baseball bat had his arm broken broken with his own weapon and the guy with knife ran out of the house. Skip shadowed the guy and had him pinned under the getaway truck. When the county Mounties got there the thieves were more than glad to see the police. Funny thing about the robbery robbery was that Skipper only had five dollars in his wallet. Hardly worth the beatings the thieves received. MORRIS FUNERAL CHAPEL LTD.
