Not any more! On November 13, 2003,1 was face to face with 11 OPP officers in a small cabin in a remote area of Northern Ontario. They were there because I had called and needed their help to find my son who had not returned to camp after the days hunt. These officers had left their supper tables, beds or regular duty and drove to Loring from North Bay, Sudbury, Parry Sound and Burkes Falls. They were part of a specialized OPP team trained in search and rescue and the cold and driving rain could not dampen their enthusiasm. The eagerness of the officers to start the search could be compared to their K9 straining straining at the leash but tempered by their training they gathered the facts and established the initial initial plan. With maps, GPS, compass and radio, the team members accompanied by some hunters left the cabin at 0200 hours on their initial search but returned unsuccessful at 0400 hours. The second stage of the search now commenced which included calling in five new members plus another K9 for daybreak. daybreak. The search captain stayed awake until 0630 hrs planning the search patterns for daybreak. daybreak. When the remaining team members arrived , everybody was asked to indicate, from the map the captain had produced, the percentage probability of finding my son in each defined search area. The search then continued in the areas of maximum probability. By 1300 hours my son had been found by one of the search teams. He was soaked to the skin and in the first stage of hypothermia. He was uninjured but had kept walking all night and that morning to try to maintain body heat. Another night in the bush would almost certainly certainly have proven fatal. The officers packed up their gear and we transported them back to and across the river to their vehicles. Just another routine assignment assignment for them but something I obviously will never forget. I will be forever grateful to the OPP Search and Rescue team and thankful that the OPP realized the need for this unit. The members of this team are in many cases the same officers who have to enforce the speed limits our system has imposed. I hope we all will remember the officer who may stop us for speeding is trying to prevent a fatality similar to the one he may have had to investigate the day before. I wish everyone, under better circumstances, circumstances, could experience the real person behind the uniform who, not expecting any special thanks, has an overwhelming desire to prevent tragedy and instil order and confidence. confidence. The citizens of Loring and Port Loring should also know that; Wilf Cosby, Clayton and Isabelle Hodgkins and especially Doug Buchanan and his companions who provided ground and water transportation without question, question, are neighbours in the true sense of the word and made me thankful I was part of your community during this difficult time.
