In a media release dated Monday, December 8, Mayor Mutton stated, "we mourn the loss of the ITER project but we are convinced that the site's potential has not been fully explored." The site selected for the ITÉR facility was just east of the Darlington nuclear power plant. The Mayor has begun promoting that site as the ideal location for the Darlington 'B' advanced CANDU reactor. However, Councillor Charlie Charlie Trim said at Monday's council meeting that he would like to see the new Liberal government sort though the mess at the Pickering A Nuclear Power Plant, before rushing into a new reactor project. With the new provincial government just coming online, a new prime minister possibly calling a spring election, election, and the delays and cost at Pickering with their newly appointed interim Board, "there are many unknowns and the timetable is not clear, said Trim. "Yes this council wants local employment," said Trim, "but I think we should be walking as a council relating to a nuclear project, and I think we should walk very carefully in the foreseeable future," he said. She was Jim's gal or was it the other way round. She had a cute little little shuffle that got her from shop to café and occasionally to the friendship club in Bowmanville. Her pleasures were simple. She liked to write poetry, buy knick- knacks and lottery tickets, eat out and give to others. But most of all she wanted to get married. Of course she had to make sure Jim was in top form before the honeymoon, so with one hand in hers and the other on his cane Jim walked every day. Jim's recovery was miraculous, so much so that Gracie bought a wedding dress in anticipation of the big event. She got to wear it on December 8, 2003 and she wore it well. It wasn't her wedding but a celebration of another sort, a celebration of her life. Gracie like most was not ready to die, but it seemed she was anticipating the worst as she prepared for an operation. She had given Christmas cards to some of iis 4#* r * 5a " tis:i ® m t 1 '"IE,i *. , Li*' -1 , Gracie Baker with Santa just a few weeks ago at Stutt's. her friends and she had told the Padre that she thought it might be cancer and she didn't didn't want to die piece by piece. Well she came through the operation only to have her heart give out two weeks later. The congregation at Gracie's funeral service would make anyone realize how far reaching this lady's life had been. It included the Tabb family that had so recently embraced and adopted adopted her, the Friendship Club that saw her generosity as a plea for belonging but loved her unconditionally, her case workers Tracy and Carol who couldn't hold back the tears as one recited a poem she had composed for Grace and the people of Orono whose paths she had crossed so briefly and like everyone else, knew they needed to be there. Sometimes we are fortunate fortunate enough to be part of something that gives you a warm feeling but you're not completely sure why. Gracie's funeral did just that.
