"I am very alarmed by the increase in the number of situations where our officers officers are confronted with weapons and the number of guns we arc finding on our streets," says police Chief Kevin McAlpine, "These targeted initiatives will continue continue in order to keep our streets safe." The first arrests took place in early October, with guns and drugs seized, Warrants were obtained to search five residences in Oshawa and were executed with the assistance of the Tactical Support Unit. Weapons recovered included included revolvers (including a .357 Magnum and a 44 Smith & Wesson), shotguns and semi-automatic handguns. handguns. A total of 36.4 grams of crack cocaine (worth $7,280), 9.8 grams of hashish (worth $200.00) and 25.6 grams of marihuana marihuana (worth $520) were also seized over the course of the project. Durham Regional Police made street gangs one of their top priorities in 2003 and will continue to investigate investigate gang activities and the threat they pose to community community safety across Durham Region. Similar targeted campaigns in Pickering (Eradicate I and 11) have also had success in removing removing dangerous weapons from the streets.
