6 -• Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 28,2004 NEWCASTLE BOWLING Orono Atoms reach finals in Peterborough Liftlock tournament MXfcDLEAGUE scores 175 + over results for Jan. 22 The Country Cafe Atoms made it to the championship game in the 46th annual Peterborough Liftlock Atom Tournament this past weekend. They came up against some tough goaltending and lost a close 4-0 score to the Goulboum Rams. The score was 1-0 after one and 2-0 after two. Orono had numerous chances to score but could not convert. Christopher Kuijpers had many of the chances and was selected third star of the game. In round robin play Orono Di's #2 meets a bump on road to success Orono #2 was. on a roll as they headed into their January 3rd game. Having posted great numbers in previous games, the Orono players were determined to keep up the good work. With goals by Tom Meester, Dustin Armstrong, David Gray, Kevin Bourke - and great goaltending by Brock Dunham and -Kenny Jackson - Orono defeated Bowmanville #1 (Black) 4-0. Hoping to continue the streak, Orono headed to their Jan. 14 game with chins high. Unfortunately, Orono could not muster any offense and Bowmanville #4 handed them a 2-0 loss. A great performance performance by the goaltenders kept this game close. On Jan. 17, Bowmanville #2 (Blue) made their way out to Orono to try and steal two points away from the home team. Like a repeat of the second second game, B2 scored two goals in the first and commanded commanded that lead the entire game. Although, Orono never generated any offense, they did have a few chances and played a very exciting and physical game., Goaltenders Kenny Jackson and Brock Dunham kept Orono alive throughout the match and at least gave their team a lighting lighting chance. Orono's next game lakes place on Jan. 26 in Courlice, good luck Orono. defeated Rice Lake 4-0. Scoring for Orono were William Kirby, Mitchell Jackson, Matthew Verkuyl, and Robert McKay. Earning assists were Christopher Kuijpers (2), and singles to Mitchell Jackson, William Kirby, Zachary Gibson, Tyson Robinson and Ryan Brandt. Ryan Brandt earned the Shutout. Orono then defeated Havelock 6-2 with goal by Evan Rosseau (2) and singles by Mitchell Jackson, William Kirby, Zachary Gibson, and Tyler Meijer. In the final round robin game, Orono had to defeat Emily-Omemee to advance to the A round. They did so by winning 3-1. Tyson Robinson led the attack by scoring twice and Evan Rosseau added a single. Assists were contributed by Stefan Fabricus (2) and singles from Zachary Gibson, Christopher Kuijpers, Patrick McKay, and William Kirby. In the semi final to advance to the A championship, Orono defeated North Frontenac 2-0 led by the solid goaltending of Ryan Brandt and defense work of Jeremy Moore, Robert McKay, Michael Richards, and Trevor Heming. These were our keys to victory. Patrick McKay opened the scoring in the second period assisted by Christopher Kuijpers and Theo Devries. Then Christopher Kuijpers added the insurance goal late in the third assisted by Robert McKay and Jeremy Moore. The whole key to the success was total team effort from the goaltender on out. It was a pleasure to see the kids work hard and see their results. -by T.R. Andy Dumouchel Allin's Orchard Midgets confident after big win The OMHA playoffs continued continued for the Allin's Orchard Leafs on Saturday Jan. 24 in Woodville. After a 5-1 victory in the first game, the Leafs were confident. With Martin between the pipes, Orono went up 1-0 early in the first with Garlick scoring unassisted. Before the end of the period, Woodville would tie it up 1-1. Woodville took the lead early in the third and as time ran down, Josh Moffat, from Sutton and Garlick, tied it up for the Leafs. This sent the game into overtime where neither neither team could score, so each team earned one point. The series resumed on Sunday. in Orono. Crashley tended the twine tent this game and was able to shut Woodville out until they scored late in the period. The second period saw both teams exchange goals with Orono's coming from Hicks, assisted by Pisani. Woodville went ahead 3-1 at 7:57 in the third but the Leafs didn't give up. Garlick, from J. Moffat and Sutton, brought the score to 3-2 at 6:23. They put a lot of pressure on Woodville late in the game but were unable to tie it up. This puts the series at 3 points a piece with the series resuming in Woodville on Feb.2. -by J.P.
