6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, March 31, 2004 Novice Reps 'B' champs in Bracebridge tournament The Orono Major Plumbing Novice Reps attended the Bracebridge Novice "A" Tournament on the weekend and came home "B" division champions. The tournament was attended attended by 16 rep teams. In the semi-finals, Orono played the Oakville Rangers and came away with a 5-2 win to send them to the "B" finals against the Highland Storm. The "B" finals would be decided by a game between Orono (OMHA D east champs) and the Storm (OMHA CC east champs). In the finals, Orono jumped out to an early lead and never looked back winning 5-3. Tournament goalscorers were Matt Verkuyl (7), Chris Haass (5), Mitch Marchbank (3), Ryan Walton (3), Dylan Dennis (3), Warren Ball (1) and Ben deBoer (1). Assists went to Dylan Dennis (7), Ryan Walton (6), Matt Verkuyl (5), Warren Ball (4), Ben deBoer (4), Chris Haass(3), Jennifer Mercer (2), Ian Third (2) and Mitch Marchbank (1). Josh Kelly was great in net earning a shutout. Congratulations to Ian Third for earning MVP in the finals and Jennifer Mercer for being chosen MVP in the semi finals. Wooden Carousel hangs In playoff action, Orono's Wooden Carousel faced off with a previously undefeated team - the Thursday Night Town League. It appeared to be a long afternoon for Orono as the Town League team scored just two minutes into the first period. However, some strong defensive play and some excellent saves by goaltender Robert Brosseau got the Carousel team back into the game by the second period. Matthew Howe scored a goal, assisted by Tyler Rich and Corey Peeters. Jonathan Austin gave the team a slim 2-1 lead before the second period was over. Orono got into penalty problems. They survived a stretch of four, minutes being short-handed in the second period, but in the third, they allowed the Town League to score a power play goal to tie the game at 2-2. The short-handed Carousel Easton Truck Major Tykes defeat rival Newcastle The Orono Easton Truck Caps Major Tykes ended the round robin portion of their playoffs with a 3-2 win against rival Newcastle. Cooper Phillips had an excellent game between the pipes and was helped by the great defensive play of Trevor Butt-Middleton, Ryan Armstrong, Chris Austin, Dylan Armstrong, Jack Kingston, Elizabeth Jackson, Daniel Owens and Tyler Trimble. Orono goals were scored by Ben deBoer (2) and Conner Whitley. Assists went to Jarrett Lane and Tyler Hutchison. The win means that the team gets to play for the 'A' Championship on Sunday, April 4 at 5:00 in Newcastle.
