6- Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, April 8, 2009 PORTS Orono novice rep season wrap up by Dean Baker ie warm weather and melting snow mark the end of a great season of hockey for the Dufferin Aggregates Orono Novice Rep Hockey Team. Leading up to their final game was a consolation round robin playoff series in which the young team was a power house with some high scoring games to their credit. In exhibition play against Rice Lake, Orono won two games 6-0 and 9-5 respectively. Series points went to Daniel Phillippe with 6g - 3a, Dylan Van Hamburg had 2g - la, Nathan Hutchison 3g -2a, Justin Theberge 2g, Jasper Godin 1g - la, Sam Baker 1g, Jacob Breen 2a, and Kiefer Phillips la. Omemee put up some tough opposition, however, it was Orono who managed to pull off two more wins: 4-2 and 6-0. Points went to Phillippe 7g - la, Theberge 2g - 2a, Hutchison 1g - 3a. In the teams final game against Millbrook to advance into the final round, Orono was alive with a incing 9-3 win Bobcaygeon that was played to a packed arena with an Orono home ice advantage. Previously in the season, Bobcaygeon had shown they could score in an 8-8 tie; so it was sure to be a good one! The first period saw some fan- tastic team play with end to end action and scoring chances for both sides. It was Bot who was on the with points awarded to Baker 3g-la, Van Hamburg 3g - la, Phillippe 2g - 3a, Hutchison lg - 2a, Breen 3a and a well earned assist from goalie Braydon Stewart who covered every inch of his crease in every game. It came down to the last game of the season against scoreboard first, but followed up quickly with a goal from Phillippe assisted by Blake Morton and Breen. Into the second period, it was to stay even at one with both teams backing some strong defense. In the round robin, the team lost to BCH an Wallaceburg and tied Essa 3-3. In the bronze match, Orono met Essa again in a very close game. Evenly matched to the end, neither team was able to capitalize, leaving the score tied 2-2 after three periods of play. Two minutes into overtime, both teams were running out of steam and the scoring opportunities were more fre- quent as both teams were looking to close it down. Unfortunately, it was Orono who was caught deep in the offensive zone, and Bobcay- geon who caught the lucky break, by retrieving a loose puck that managed to find its way through the crease to end this one in sudden death 3-2. It was a tough loss for this young team who has seen their share of ups and downs throughout the season. As we reflect back on this season, we realize that the measure of their success is not in the number of games won or the trophies they brought home, but rather in their indi- vidual enjoyment and im- provement over the course of the season. As individuals, these kids had a tremendous amount of fun and experi- enced some of the highs and the lows of team sports with contributions from each and every player. As a team, these boys represented the town of Orono with the respect and sportsmanship of a profes- sional hockey team. Some- thing we all should be very proud of. A big thank-you to the coaching staff, | Marcel Theberge (head coach), Paul Hutchison (assistant coach), Kim Hutchison (manager) and Dean Baker (trainer/scribe) for their time and dedication to the sport. A special thanks goes out to all of the parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters who gave up their time to attend practices, games, and tournaments that helped make everyone feel part of the team. Lastly, from the entire Novice Rep family, we want to thank the OAAA for its help and support over the season and Dufferin Aggregates for their support and generosity, for without either we would have been playing shinny on Marcel's rink!
