TWO million men are in France and two million girls are making munitions here at home. For every fighter there is a, woman worker. We are giving our daughters as well as our sons. England's women have formeçI this -second line of defense. So have the women of France. Now American girls have taken their places at machines as new to them as trench-fighting was to their husbands and sweethearts and brothers. And this creation of an industrial army bas brought about new con- ditions whcre the work of >these United War Work organizations fils a vital need. Thlnk of the thou- sanda of girls who are cheerfully giving up their homes to live in crowded centres. Think of their loneliness, their fatigue, their lack of wholesomne diversion and recreation if it were flot for the pro- vision that is mnade by these organizations. Think of the danger in social situations created by this sudden lifting of restraint Thinlc how ideals could become blurred and standards' lost in the whirl of changed conditions.. Think cf the girls who are risking their lives every houri of every day as they work with high explosives. But this army of women bas not been forgot-: ten. By emergency housing, by clubs, by bureaus, for foreign-born women, and by hotels and social centres the new problems are being met Just as the nurse or telephone operator who goes to France finds that horne surroundlngs have vice as much as beCIi provlded lbr her i before 1twelve hotels and sixteen before Isocial centres over there, bd hi m e $10,000M 80 Uic munition worker a t cao., the cotan sd sert here vit home finds that i a eur isrseu ~she has beeni remernberecL She la risklng her life HOM"lyng,00,OO'au and her, country ls dolng [Ou o cnmail It can to show Its gratL.' it svsry flhterhanthe. o tude.
