This is what one of the'newspapers pubisedin the territory we serve has to say on the subject: T rom the Chfllicothe,- 'III. Enqivfer.'-.. May 19, 1920 I INCREASES EXPLAINED The increases in electric and water rates petitioned for by the Public Serv- ice Comnpany are very moclest comparedc with the increases demnanded and paid for most commodities. They do not exceed 25 per cent in any cas, com- pared with a 50 per cent increase in passenger fares on the rairoada and ranging up to 700 per cent in the case of sugar, which, s0 f ar as we know, is at the apex of the pyramid of high prices. The profiteer, unrestrainecl by the public utilities commission or other regulating body, would look on a 25 per cent increase wth contempt, a 'bagatelle flot worth considering. Ili* would imply that the public utilities commission is of-sanie use in the world, in apte of the kicks we are in the habit of bestowing an it. lnstead of 12 cents per kilowatt hour which the sual1 user of electricity bas been paying, tbe Public Service Comi- pany is asking the privilege of charging 13 cents. Instead af 8 cents per kilo' watthour which the large user is paying now, the company is asking 9 cents. The commercial rate would b. 12 cents instead of 10, and the users of maxi- mum quantities oi electricity, ai wbomn there are none outaide of tbe bakeries, we believe, would pay 4 cents instead of 3 cents. In accordance with the. proposed schedule, the rate for 18,750 gallons ai water, now charged for at 30 cents, will be 371,/2 cents. The minimum,. rate af $1 .75 per quarter year remains in force, sa that à little rationing and care 'in the us of water wil protect the. amaîl con- sumer from increased rates. The large user of water wilI pay thc increase ai around 25 per cent. T7here is nothing in the schedule on file in the.office ai Uiec company ber. in regard ta street lighting rates or fire'hy- diant rentaI. The contracta Uic two towns have with thc company for this service soon expire. , The statement is exceedingly fair one, The costs of our product have advanced enormously, whereas the selling prices remain what' they were in 1 914. The personal experience of every one who reads it - will indicate that this is an impossible situation. Every community we serve is interested in seeing that the situation is relieved because every community 15 interested in seeing that our service is maintaiped on a high plane of efficiency. We are asking the very mini- mumn advance in rates necessary to do this.
