Thursday, October 2, 1930 It is appropriate to ask what beâ€" comes of all the various "petitions for the repeal of prohibition" initiâ€" ated with brass band publicity. They uppear to be fakes and many of them are simply the background of ‘ atâ€" tempts to get money under false preâ€" tenses. . Not long ago there appeared in some of the Indiana . newspapers a statement that a woman‘s organizaâ€" tion opposed to prohibition had orâ€" ganized a petition with thousands of names in opposition to prohibition. The following from Congressman Louis Ludlow of Indiana is a sample of scores of letters relative to these soâ€"called wet "petitions." "I have made diligent inquiries," says Congressman Ludlow, "to ascerâ€" tain whether petitions are coming to congress from women urging the reâ€" peal of the 18th amendment and I have not found the slightest trace that such activity is going on." Aâ€" wet organization opened imâ€" pressive offices in Chicago and sent out ‘a thousand solicitors to collect names for a wet petition in opposiâ€" tion to prohibition. The solicitors were instructed to get a dollar with every name, and inform signers of the petition that the money was for "expenses." Investigation â€" showed ~that â€" the money was divided between the origâ€" inators of the wet organization and the house to house solicitors, the orâ€" vanization getting and keeping about 90c on every dollar. Nearly $50,000 was taken : away from Chicago on this one petition fraud. Not one name was ever sent| to Washington, it was reported. | MISS ANNA WILLAS 371 Laurel Ave. â€" Phone H.
