£¥ OUR POLITICIANS AND OFFICIALS ARE Diamond Joe Esposito, Chicago character, consorting with gunmen and killers on the one hand and Senator Deneen and Fred Lundin on the other, presents a rather vivid picture of modern politics. j _ It is a sad state of affairs when men high in the councils of the Republican party, either in Chicago or Waukegan com-- promise with law bréakers for political gain. The following paragraphs from Tuesday's Chicago Tribune story of raids in that city, having as their purpose the apprehending and deporting of foreign gunmen, is illuminating: °_ Lieut. Christy Hughes, who had taken South Halstead street where Diamond Joe Esposito is carrying on his campaign for county commissioner. for himsel{ and his six prisoners from the headquarters at 84# iC allies on the Lundin--Deneen--Better Govern-- ment ticket, then went to the restaurant at + 850 Halstead street. ' s Diamond Joe, himself, was present, but denied ownership of. this place, which was closed for a year when he pleaded guilty to '; violating the prohibition law there. Five : prisoners came from the restaurant and | Diamond Joe drove to the detective bureau : "to see that everything was all right." _ "It is not an unusual spectacle in Lake county to find a police department head, constables or deputies, consorting with illictit booze sellers or patronizing bling pigs, and law enforce-- ment here suffers in a proportionate degree with that in Cook county, in consequence. > Of course law enforcement has come to be pretty much of a joke. And it isn't because of prohibition either. But is because of the attitude of men we elect as enforcers and the politicians who compromise-- with violators and petty and major criminals if it is to their political advantage to do so. Agitation urging that the home merchants be given a chance usually results in giving them a chance to sign on all subscription papers. Also a good deal of pains is taken to see that the home merchants are not deprived of a chanee to buy tickets to local entertainments.
