THE LAKE COUNTY REGISTER, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1926 | _ Roald Amundsen, on December 14, | 1911, gained the coveted distinction | of being the first to reach the South (Pole. Five weeks later Scott, who 'had raced with Amundsen for the ihonorx, reached the pole, but death overcame hin and members of his 'party on the return journey. With ! exhaustion fast overcoming them, they pitched their tent within eleven ;miles of one of their depots and there, sometime later, the bodies were found, with Scott's hercic mes-- PICTURE LOG OF POLAR f FLIGHT GIVEN TO WORLD Too often these expeditions have ended in failure and it has been left to the drifting snow to raise a mon-- ument of white to the herves who gave up 'their lives in the land of the midnight sun. In 1893 Nansen planned to drift across the°polar regions in a ship of powerful construction. When his craft was stuck in the ice Nansen and a companion set out on foot an:l got to within 225 miles of the North Pole. . The Duke of Abruzzi attempted in 1900 to reach the North Pol& and came within 206 miles of the goal!. While the arctic polar region lies in a great buin,}he antarctic pol-- ar region is a plateau surrounded by an ocean. Captain Jimes Cook set cut in 1728 to explore this region. Kilkes in 1840 discovered the antarc-- tic continent. Sir James Ross in 1841 made further discoveries in the far south, including Victoria Land. Scott and Shackleton made explora-- tions in the early 20th century. Shackleton discovered the South Magnetic Pole. ® Since Henry Hudson perished amid the ice and snow of North America in, an atempt to find 2 northwest passage to India, many thrilling chapters ahve been writ-- ten of man's atempt to conquer the polar regions. > Unsuccessful attempts to find a northwest passage to India were ma:ile by Sir John Ross, by Pery, "The Champion of the North," and others In 1841 Sir oJjn Franklin maae a final effort to find that ighway of dreams, and skeleton after skeleton told the tale of his party's fate. > . -- reeley, an American, explored the coast of Greenland in 1881. The prize o tthree centuries of he-- roic 'striving was finally won by Peary, who 'planted the American flag at the north pole on April 6, PHONE WAUKEGAN 37. The attention of the entire world was focused on this daring attempt to reach this much--coveted, goal by plane. It was expected that an eight--hour flight would bring the planes in the vicinity of the pole. It was agreed that when the fuel supply was half gone, the planes should land, as it was believed as much fuel would be needed for the return journey as for the first hop. The planes landed and upon taking bearings were found to be a little over one hundred miles from the Pole. 'They had been carried west of their course and precicus petrol had been used which was necessary to carry them to their objective. For 24 days after these daring ad-- venturers had sailed into the white desert their fate was unknown to the world. Few persons other than scientists believed that the little party had survived the rigors of the arctic and teh danger of a fatal mis-- hap to the planes. What a surprise it was when the party came sailing into the harbor at Spitzbergen on a little sealing boat which had picked them up near King's Bay, where the cne plane on which the entire crew made the re-- turn journey had been forced down. The world rejoiced. -- The little band of intrepid explorers was greeted as it they were conquering emperors rturning from the wars. Warships hundreds of water craft and thous-- ands of people in Norway paid tribute to them. * The equipment carried on this ex-- pedition was necessarily very lim-- ited, but room was found for a mo-- tion picture camera and a pictorial log of the journey was recorded. This precarious can of film --was brought back safely on the return journey and now motion picture au-- viences the world over are permit-- ted to 'see on the screen the screen the awe--inspiring story of this epic of th polar regions.
