Interurban Company Of-- fers to Reduce Cuts tc 70 and 54 Cents; Men Demanding Pay Increase Union officials handling the affairs of 750 trainmen of the North Shore tines in their wage controversy decided last night to call for a referendum vote next week on a new wage proposal submitted yesterday at a meeting of the arbitration board in President Britton T. Budd's office in Chicago. The new proposal calls for & reduction in pay for train men on interurban cars from 73 to 70 cents an hour and for trainmen on the one man safety cars of Waukegan and Milwaukee from 58 to 54 cents an hour. The epinion preveiled last night that the men would réfuse to consider the de-- Chicaro «tr for a strike b jority, and 0 The decision to call for a referend-- | um vete was reached la«t nicht at' a meeting of the trainmen in High-- wood. A definite Jaie for the vote us not been set. Despite the as--' surances of the officiats of the road ithat everything will be settied nth-i factorily the belief was exprranedl that the mher would balk at accept-- ing any wage cut. The cut as pm-| posec based on the entire yoar' »mounts to about 3'> per cent. The previous offer of the company | vwhich was turned down by the union called for a 5 per cent cat Sept. 1 and another 5 per cent cut on Jan. 1. rext. The new proposa; covers only | the one reduction. Last night's meeting of the train men at Highwood followed a serfes of conferences of the officials an« trainmen's representatives in °Mr BEudd's Chicago office. The wage scales were discussed and the pro-- posa'! of the company announced. According t the new eut w til Sept. 1. I believed, that addressed the hea "I'd like to negot said he.
