If you can't find a village marshal'; when you have a prisoner to put in jail the thing to do is ring the fire bell, summon the whole populace and take a chance at the police marshal being in the crowd that responds. At least such was the conclusion of Constable Brune of Prosecutor Smith's Sponge Squad. Saturday night when he reach-- ed Fox Lake after having made an ar-- rest in the lake region. Brune brought his prisoner to Fox Lake and because he had another er-- rand in that section he did not want to bother to hurry bim to Waukegan. So he figured he would lock him up in the Fox Lake jail until ready to go to the county seat. | «t d w dillh oftradeiniiheni ne m Now, at Fox Lake they have a big fire bell located over the village hall. When there is a fire in town the first one discovering it rings the bell vigor-- ously and thereby summons the volun-- teer fire department and the populace. So Brune, requiring a key to get into the jail, and not wishing to stand there all night waiting for the marshal to accidentally appear, seized the rope, pulled the fire bell with all his might and soon had everybody running pell-- mell toward the village hall. He made inquiry about fown for the marshal but could get no trace of him.
