FieldBrothers Field and Brothers was a very successful dry goods store on King Street. Established in 1832 by John Field, it operated for almost 100 years. John Field was raised in a mercantile family from Wiveliscombe, Somerset, England, and was apprenticed in the trade in nearby Taunton. Like Peter McCallum, he established his dry goods business immediately after his arrival in Cobourg. Two of his sons, John C. and Corelli C., took over managing their father's store in the late 1850s. Their goal was one price for all and the lowest price possible, matching with the changing trends of shopping. They sold a variety of products ranging from fabric and notions, to gloves and ready to wear clothing. They did this without neglecting their local customers. Field and Brothers valued having new stock. They had twice-a-year sales, reducing old stock to make way for new items. As a result the store was kept up to date with current trends. ONE PRICE FOR ALL AND THE LOWEST PRICE POSSIBLE "There were so many especially good lines demanding attention it was a difficult matter to know what to inspect first… Messer Field and Bro are prepared to compare prices and value with any mercantile establishment in town or city. This was a strong feature of their summer trade and especially appreciated by our American summer residents, for many dining room table received its full requisite of dainty … linen from their store." - Cobourg World 1898 This fine home of Corelli C. Field was at King St. W. and Ontario St.
