Description
Made of wood. Large, spoon-shaped paddle attached to a short, hooked handle.
Notes
A butter paddle was one of the tools used in the process of making butter. When the cream is churned it causes chunks of butter to float on the top; these chunks are pulled out and worked with a butter paddle to remove the excess liquid and/or air bubbles trapped inside while it is rinsed. This ensured that the butter was pure and would not go rancid. It also firmed the butter to allow easy packing inside of a butter mold/press.
