As we celebrate Canada's 150th birthday we take a look at those who have served us in politics locally, but also at a provincial and national level. The Candidates: George Morss Jukes Boswell | 1804-1889 Born: 1804 in Hampshire, England Died: 29 August 1889 in Cobourg Ontario Career: Lawyer and public servant Public Service: 1837 was a Brigade Major to suppress the rebellion but then was hired as a lawyer to defend several who were charged with high treason in the rebellion. Two were acquitted. 1841-1844 Legislative Assembly - good debater, worked toward responsible government 1845 appointed a Judge Way To Confederation George Strange Boulton | 1797-1869 Born: 1797 in New York State Died: 1869 in Cobourg Career: Lawyer, survey contractor, public servant Public Service: 1812 Served as militia private in war of 1812, eventually Lt Colonel 1824-1826 Registrar for Northumberland Co. 1824-1825 Member of House of Assembly for Durham 1824-25 1830-1831 Member of the House of Assembly -Conservative Note: Apprenticed Wm. Henry Draper as a young lawyer who would later become Solicitor General and Attorney General of Upper Canada. Asa Allworth Burnham 1808-1873 Born: 1808 in Hamilton Township Died: 1873 in Ottawa as Senator of Canada while still a resident of Hamilton Township Career: Farmer and Public servant Public Service: 1845, 1847-9 Board of Police for the town of Cobourg [Board of Police was the term for Town Council at that time] 1851 Warden of Northumberland and Durham and elected to the Legislative Assembly 1861-1862 Mayor of Cobourg 1863-1867 Elected to the Legislative Council for Newcastle District 1867 Appointed to the Senate until his death in 1873 James Cockburn 1819-1883 Born: 1819 in England Died: 1883 in Cobourg. Career: Lawyer, in partnership with D'Arcy Boulton Public Service: 1855, 56, 59 Cobourg Town Council 1861 He won a seat in Parliament defeating Sidney Smith 1863 Acclaimed to represent our region 1864 Appointed as solicitor general 1867 Acclaimed again and he was chosen as speaker of the House of Commons. 1873 Re-elected as the Speaker of the House of Commons for one year 1878 Elected once again to Parliament 1881 Appointed to the Commission on Dominion Statutory Law
