It is the oldest home in Cobourg with its original exterior. Because of its safe harbour, this area was chosen as the capital of the County of Newcastle following the sinking of HMS Speedy. The courts moved to Victoria Hall in 1860, the jail to Albert St. in 1906, it was rebuilt after a fire in 1934 and demolished in 1986.
