CRR_Panel9_10_rnd3 A TRANSITORY APPEARANCE The Canadian Northern Railway was the third railway to enter Cobourg. It originated as a short line on the Canadian Prairies. By the early 20th century its two proponents, William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, were Canada's paramount railway builders, with visions of creating a transcontinental rail line. The CNoR served Cobourg for only a decade. By 1917 it was bankrupt and was a constituent member of the newly created Canadian National Railway. Following a flood east of Cobourg in 1924, the CNoR line to Trenton was closed. By mid decade the line between Cobourg and Port Hope ceased to operate, as the CNR closed parallel lines which were not required to maintain service. Material prepared by Ted Rafuse. CANADIAN SHORT-LIVED INTRUDER This tinted post card, likely from the period 1911-1914 provides a southern view of Cobourg's CNoR station. An eastbound passenger train has stopped at the station and careful scrutiny reveals the tender and part of the locomotive at the extreme right end of the station. Horse and buggy conveyances meet the train as no motorized vehicles are on site. Note the covered porticos and the large wall brackets holding the roof. The two workers behind and somewhat below the station platform appear to be working on the drainage system or a foundation for a light standard. Looking eastward, to the north of the tracks, is a water column to fill the tender of steam locomotives. In the distance is the CNoR freight shed, perhaps unpainted.
