- Description
- Sad (solid) irons typically weigh between 5-9 pounds. The weight was required to store heat inside the iron after it was heated on an open fire or a stove. Metal-handled irons were quickly replaced by sad irons with wooden handles. These irons required regular, light greasing to avoid burning or pulling fabric.
We have 6 sad irons in our collection. Five of these are from James Smart Manufacturing Company, inscribed “JAS. SMART MFG. CO. LTD. BROCKVILLE. ONT”. The other one were manufactured by the Colebrookdale Iron company, and is inscribed “COLEBROOKDALE IRON CO. BOYERTOWN PA. USA.” - Date of Original
