Gillbard (1833 England - 1897 Cobourg) While Asa's birth and death occur in the same place, Hamilton Township, he did not stay put during his life for either his location or his job. Asa A. Burnham Jr. (1835 - 1900) William Gillbard (John Wm.'s grandfather) operated a grocery store on Division Street in 1851. John followed in his grandfather's footsteps, and at the age of 24 is listed in the 1857 Ontario Directory as having a grocery store on King Street. His chief claim to fame seems to have been as the brother of Thomas Gillbard, local School Board Trustee for 40 years, after whom Cobourg's prominent Central School was renamed. Probably he was helping his uncle William on the Roddick farm. The Roddick family fared quite well in cattle judging according to the Journal and Transactions of the Board of Agriculture of Upper Canada. 1871 Census - listed as grocer in Cobourg 1891, 1901 Census - listed as farming Best Guess: This jug was in use between 1870 and 1880.
