Guillet (1898 Cobourg - 1975 North York) was a local historian, author and educator so it is not surprising that the family name crops up in numerous connections. His grandfather, John, established a grocery store in Cobourg in 1842 and it continued in operation until his son, Edwin Sr., retired in 1928. E. Guillet John Guillet (1802-1872) 1842 - establishes a grocery business 1851 Census - listed as a grocer on King Street; 1857 - in business as a general dealer George Guillet - son of John & brother of Edwin Sr. (1840-1926) 1865 - listed as dealer in groceries and provisions 1870 - listed as groceries, crockery etc. on King Street, James Guillet is a clerk in this store. George boards at the North American Hotel along with Asa A Burnham Jr. and other young professionals. 1880 - listed as a merchant on King Street 1887 & 1890 - Business Directories of our area do not list any Guillets. 1896 Directory - lists the business as Guillet Bros. Edwin Guillet Sr. (1863-1936) 1911 Cobourg Census - lists Edwin and his son Edwin C. aged 12 Edwin Guillet reports that Stuart Hooey Sr. first established his Cobourg grocery store in 1847. The Cobourg Public Library elaborates, stating that Hooey & Sons had groceries but their main emphasis was on wines and liquors. Two of Stuart's sons, William Wilson (b1852) and Stuart Jr. (b1856) became merchants in their own right Hooey and Son (Stuart Sr. 1819 Ireland - 1875 Cobourg) Best Guess: This jug was in use after 1926. 1861 Census - Stuart Hooey Sr. listed as a grocer 1871 Census- Stuart Hooey Sr. listed as grocer/merchant 1885 - Stuart Hooey Jr. is a grocer in Belleville 1943 - Wm Wilson Hooey, merchant, dies - lived on Henry Street, Cobourg We wonder whether you got a loyalty discount when you brought a merchant's jug back for a refill.
