- The “town and country” newspaper was published by Cobourg’s Dennis Forster. During most of the years 1967 to 1980 it was a monthly production delivered free and funded by lots of local advertising. It was a family and community oriented newspaper, including jokes and drawings as well as items of local interest. The May 1980 issue was 20 pages long.
Mr. Forster majored in English and psychology at the University of Toronto and was a veteran of the Second World War. In 1942 he won an award for the best essay written in the British Empire. For much of his life he was involved in the newspaper business. Locally he was known to many for his portrayal of Santa and even broadcast Santa messages from his hospital bed in his last winter. Dennis Forster died in 1981.
The May 1980 issue of the “town and country” was donated to the Cobourg Museum by two of his children, Donna Forster and Denise Rouw. With their approval it is to be passed on to the Northumberland County Archives and Museum for safekeeping.
(Note: The “town and country” and the”Nut-Shell” (1890s) are two local newspapers not included in the Museum’s Newspapers exhibit of 2015. We expect there are others!) - Publisher
