- Notes
- In May 1885 the first recorded motion to organize a Baptist church was recorded and by September 18th of the same year the first service was held in the YMCA Hall with delegates from seven neighbouring Baptist Churches. In the same year a lot was bought on the north side of King Street at McGill and in 1886 the building was constructed and finished. Unfortunately there is no record of the official opening or dedication. Early in the new century the congregation had outgrown the premises. With the Wesleyan and Methodist Episcopal churches having united, the original Methodist building on the corner of King and Ball Streets was unoccupied. After much negotiation, the Cobourg Baptist Church found themselve in the building at the beginning of 1902. Although the building originally had a spire, after lightening struck, it was reconstructed as a tower. In 1944 the congregation renamed itself 'Calvary Baptist Church'.
