- Notes
- The Bell Telephone Compnay came to Cobourg sometime between 1881 and 1882 when an exchange was set up and linked by long distance wires to Port Hope. Mr. George Stephans, a furnituremaker and undertaker was the first agent, with the switchboard being in his store. The first directory in 1883 listed 39 subscribers. In 1902 the office moved to Mr. Tait's store on Division Street. In 1914 it moved to 287 Division Street and then in the 1950s, across the road to 270 Division Street. By then there were about 2300 subscribers. In 1955 the dial system was installed in a new office on Chapel Street.
