Description
The Hill was the home of William Weller in the 1850s. It was often used as a stopping place for the stagecoaches.
Notes
What is now known as Villa St. Joseph, on 445 Monk St., was known as The Hill and occupied one of the finest locations in Cobourg, a point of land jutting out into Lake Onatio. It was built in 1844 for Winkworth Tremaine and later became the home of William Weller, the famous stage-coach operator and first mayor of Cobourg (1850). William Weller founded his stage coach line in the 1820s and moved to Cobourg around 1830. He was a very prominent figure in Cobourg life, was married twice and had 22 children. It then became the summer home of Nellie Grant Sartoris, the daughter of President Ulysses S. Grant.
