- Alfred Frederick William Hayward (1856-1939)was world-famous for his flower paintings. He, along with his brother Gerald, were born at Ravenscourt, between Cobourg and Port Hope to Captain Alfred and Caroline Hayward.

- Like many of the American Impressionists who journeyed to London and Paris to study, Alfred Hayward left Canada in 1876 to immerse himself in the swirling art world of these two cities. By 1876 he is recorded in London, studying at the West London School of Art and then later at the Royal Academy. This was an institution with which he was to continue a lifetimes relationship, exhibiting there as well as the Royal Scottish Academy a the Royal Institute of Oil painters. Best known for his still life observations of a wide variety of flowers, his work is represented in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, and principal works include “Autumn Berries, Gourds and Fruit” and “Californian Poppy
