- Notes
- John David Kelly (1862-1958) was born in Gore's Landing and was to become an artist of international renown. In 1870 his father moved back to the original homestead midway between Roseneath and Dartford. John was enrolled at the Ontario School of Art and on his graduation in 1881 received the highest award. He was a very popular painter because his pictures had a kind of nostalgic flavour which art critics despised, but fellow Canadians loved. Every summer he returned to Gore's Landing to study, paint and visit friends, especially lifelong friend William Herald, son of canoe designer Daniel Herald.
