- Notes
- Yachting had been popular in Cobourg as early as the 1850s. Regattas were held in the harbour and Cobourg was a noted shipbuilding centre in the early eighteen-thirties. Later, Cobourg was on of the points on Royal Canadian Yacht Club Three Point race, the others being Toronto and Rochester. This yacht was purchased in the New York city area about 1906 by H.J. and W.E.H.Carter. they sailed up the Hudson River and Erie Canal to Oswego and then to the R.C.Y.C. in Toronto. Here is was sailed and raced extensively until about 1915 when the lead keel was donated to the war effort as was the case with many other yeacts. It was sold in 1918 and remained at the R.C.Y.C. for several more years. Then it was sold again and went to Kingston area. It reappeared at the National Yacht Club, Toronto as a schooner named El Viento about 1945. in the early 1950s it again changed hands and went to the West Indies to be used in the inter island trade where it was lost after striking a reef.
