- General Charles Lane Fitzhugh was the youngest civil war general in the Union Army. The Fitzhugh's were an old Virginia family of great wealth who spent much time in Cobourg after 1867. Charles became a prominent Cobourg citizen and shareholder in the Cobourg, Peterborough and Marmora Railway Company.
