- Notes
- These gentlemen were Cobourg Firefighters who perished in the 1878 Windsor Hotel Fire on the north east corner of Swayne and Division Streets, Cobourg. Originally six fire fighters were trapped : the above-mentioned along with Walter Grieve, F. W. Beebe and G. W. Alexander, all of Cobourg. As this was believed to be arson, a reward of $500.00 was offered by Town Council for any information. The Windsor Hotel was forerunner to the Dunham, and was owned by William Battell with the proprietor Thomas Connor, who was also Fire Chief at this time. Near the end of the fire, which occurred in April of 1878, the wall on the one side collapsed burying the six men. The entire fire brigade attended the funeral of each of the victims.
