- Notes
- In 1854, James Crossen, proprietor of the Cobourg Car Works married Margaret Hayden, sister of John Hayden. Both were children of Reverend William Hayden, who was instrumental in the development of the Congregational Church in Canada. Originally known as Cedar Hedge, Crossen house was built in 1871. The Car Works, which employed over 600 people, was located behind and to the north of the house towards the railway. In 1891 this company upgraded to the Crossen Car Manufacturing Co. of Cobourg, which made all kinds of railway cars, including the famous Pullman sleeping car. The substantial bargeboard, treillage, and iron work above the bays, are quite remarkable.
