- The Cobourg Matting and Carpet Works was the only one of its kind in Canada. It was formed in 1884 out of a smaller enterprise and manufactred rugs and mats, including cocoa, jute, matting and wool rugs. Mats from this factory were in government buildings in Ottawa and Toronto and nearly every church and public building across Canada. At its peak, the factory employed over 50 people
