In 1837 he returned to Canada and was called to the bar. He then moved to Cobourg to practice law with his uncle, George Strange Boulton, who had resided there for sometime. Later he entered into partnership with James Cockburn.

D’Arcy Boulton came from a influential Toronto family. They were prominent in the family compact and closely associated with Bishop Strachen and Sir John Beverly Robinson.

In 1838 D’Arcy Boulton married Emily Heath, daughter of Lt.-Colonel Charles Heath. They had seven children.

Around 1842 he built a large home on Darcy Street called “The Lawn.” He and his wife resided there until the early 1900’s.

In 1839 he became a member of the Board of Police and from 1840-42 as well as 1846 he sat as President. He was also mayor of the town from 1854 to 1857.

During his life he was active in many community schemes. He promoted the Cobourg to Peterborough Railway, the building of Victoria Hall and the planking of Kingston Road among other things. He was also a member of the town trust and very active in military affairs.

He was a Colonel in the Militia and during the Rebellion of 1837 was present at the attack of Montgomery’s Inn.

In 1855 Colonel Boulton formed a cavalry battalion called the Prince of Wales Canadian Dragoons. In 1894 he was allowed to retire as its commander.

Boulton was an escort for the Prince of Whales during his visit in 1860. On his departure at Montreal, the Prince of Whales commanded General Bruce to send Colonel Boulton a portrait of himself, autographed as a memento.
