CHARLES SMITH RUTHERFORD

5th Canadian Mounted Rifles

Charles Smith Rutherford was born in Haldimand Township, Ontario, on the 9th of January 1892. He was educated at Dudley Public School and spent his early years on the farm. He enlisted in The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada on the 2nd of March 1916, and shortly afterwards transferred to the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Lieutenant Rutherford won the Military Medal at Passchendaele in 1917 and the Military Cross at Arvillers on the 8th of August 19I8. The action described in the citation took place at Monchy-le-Preux, France, on the 26th of August 1918. When the Second World War broke out Charles Smith Rutherford enlisted in the Veteran's Guard of Canada as a lieutenant. Since demobilization in 1946 he has been postmaster at Colborne, Ontario.
