Cobourg television station still hopes January 1 start

By MANDY MARTIN

The educational television station proposed last year for Cobourg and area north to include Peterborough is "moving quite well" Garth Cane president of Concepts Telecasting Foundation Inc. said this week.

"Personally I would like to see the station in operation by January 1, 1972. It all depends on how the money comes in," said Mr. Cane. "We have been licenced as a foundation now which means all donations are tax deductable. "

The station, to function on a high frequency on cable connection, would operate for 100 hours a week: 80 hours of educational programming, 10 hours of public information and 10 hours of entertainment. Mr. Cane said he hoped the station would be working in close relationship with community colleges, universities and school boards throughout the area. At present, the provincial Department of Education is involved, he said.

"We are keeping relatively quiet about the location for the station at present," said Mr. Cane. "Certain people have to know like the Town Fathers who will be providing services. We don't want to release too much information at present and fragment the information."

There are rumours that the group is seeking the officer's mess building at the Canadian Forces base on D'Arcy St.

The building to be used for the station has proved to be larger than was expected. Mr. Cane says the additional area may be used to build a third studio.

At present, various industrial companies are being approached to donate funds for the project. "We seem to be successful in several areas," said Mr. Cane. "We're not cashing any cheques until the licence is granted."

The law stipulates that if the foundation folds, all assets will be distributed to educational bodies involved and if none of these are involved, then assets must go to other charities such as the Red Cross.

The Foundation involves 7 directors to make operational decisions and 28 trustees yet to be picked. There would be 10 trustees from Northumberland-Durham, 10 from Peterborough and 8 representatives of groups contributing funds to the station.
