And Writer

Catherine Parr Traill who died 66 years ago was both pioneer, naturalist and writer.

The Cobourg World, September I, 1899, stated, "One of the most notable characters of Canadian history passed from the scene of earthly activity in the person of Mrs. Catherine Parr Traill, who died at her residence, Lakefield, Ontario, on Tuesday aged 98 years. Her span of life almost touched the borders of two centuries, but her physical ability and mental vigor were truly wonderful and hearts an over the Dominion feel they have sustained a great loss in the passing of the talented authoress to her eternal rest."

In 1832, Mrs. Traill described Cobourg as "a neatly built and I flourishing village, containing many good stores, mills, a banking house, and printing office where a news-paper is published once a week.
