Governor General will open restored Victoria Hall
Canada’s Governor General Ed Schreyer will officially re-open Cobourg’s Victoria Hall this October. The 123-year-old building was opened for the first time in 1860 by King Edward VII when he was Prince of Wales.
Victoria Hall houses the Great Concert hall (which has summer theatre this season), provincial court, municipal offices, council chambers and art gallery.
It is a national historic site, the finest town hall in Canada, and holds the Heritage Canada awards for an outstanding national restoration project. While it has been aided by many governments, the restoration of Victoria Hall is stilt h single largest single private restoration project ever undertaken in Canada.
Beautifully restored sunken courtroom is patterned after Old Bailey in London, England
