Winchester's new plant
THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF ITS LIFE
This week townspeople look with pride at their new Winchester plant (and we purposely say "their" not "the” because in a community like this there is a certain proprietary interest in everything that goes on).
It is “their” and “our” school, and church and beach and main street. Its “our” town hall, and so on.
So, to you visitors this week to Winchester, get used to it, you may be paying the bills for that beautiful new building, but it is “out” Winchester plant.
The new plant offers magnificent working conditions, and is a credit to the company and to the town. Economically it offers something more, it gives new expandability to a growing business. A lot of the production from the Cobourg plant is now going into the export trade as rising standards of living give more time for hunting sports. Employment has moved up from under 100 a decade ago when Winchester bought out the Cooey company to 265 today.
There is plenty of room for expansion. Winchester as part of the giant US. Olin Corp., is allied closely with the whole recreation field. Olin has interests in camping equipment, all sorts of chemicals and aluminum, building materials, and even skis. When the market is right for further development in Canada, the energetic management team already here in Cobourg will have already spotted the potential, and make the move. It is our bet that it won’t be too many years until the Cobourg plant is making a lot more products than rifles, shotguns and ammunition.
All of us in Cobourg will be watching closely. And we will take pride in the company’s every success.
