Toronto’s Juanty Lamport Wins Again As Plowman District Day Interest keen

Mayor A.A. Lamport of Toronto, yesterday carried off top honors as a straight-furrow artist in competition with the chief magistrates of ten other Ontario cities and towns. His victory at the International Plowing match, held at the United Counties Home Farm near Cobourg, was his second in two years. Last year he outclassed, among other, Mayor Charlotte Whitton of Ottawa.

With customary aplomb Mr. Lamport guided his tractor along his narrow path, and as he gave a final touch of nicety to his furrow crests he clearly was not to be classed as a “horny-handed” son of toil, for his nimble fingers were encased in gloves.

Second place honors went to Mrs. Bernadette Smith of Woodstock, who displayed her mettle in producing an all but unwavering line across the demonstration area.

Cobourg’s J.D. Burnet finished a creditable third. Mrs. Grace McFarland of Leamington, the second woman contestant was in eight place.

IN the Ontario Championship Class, for tractors, two furrows the off-time champion in events of the kind, R. Timbers of Stouffville, added to his laurels by finishing at the top of the list of contestants in which is was a case of “Greek meeting Greek.”

Local interest was whether by the fact that yesterday was “District Day” in the competitions. The title arises from the fact that instead of local matches held by Plowmen’s Associations in nearby counties, the competitions are transferred to the important provincial competitions. Taking part yesterday were plowmen from Durham, Northumberland, Peterborough, Victoria, Ontario, Peel, Hastings, and other counties. Plowing experts took the view that the quality of the furrow work was highly creditable and at least up to the standard of former years.
