- Overseas Officials And Contestants At World Plowing Match Here
ALFRED MALL(Secretary, world Champion- ship Ploughing Organization)
Alfred Hall is founder-secretary of the British Ploughing Associat- ion. Owing recent months he has visited Sweden, Norway, Canada and Germany in connection with the World Championship Plough- ing Organization.
He is a farmer and hags been regular radio broadcaster with the B.B.C. for nine years. He is also a well-known T.V. commen- tator on farming and country life subjects, as well as an agricul- tural and Country life columnist. He has been organizer of agricul- tural shows for many years and was associated with production of several films with outdoor sub- jects, as well as acting in some of them.
He is a Rural District Coun- cillor and member of several local government boards and other au- thorities. He is also a governor of a boys' school.
The Six Nations Indians are to confer an honorary chieftainship on him during the visit of the overseas teams to Brantfard area. Mr. Hall opened Roseneath Ag- ricultural Fair October 3. Mr. Hall's farm is at Roseneath, Sea- ton, Workington, Cumberland England.
Great Britain
T. LESLIE DIXONGlebe Farm, Billingham, Co. Durham, contestant, age 47 years. Operates a 126 acre farm (mixed and dairy). Has won 96 champ- ionships and first prizes in plow- ing matches in England, Scot- land, Ireland and Wales. Is cham- pion tractor plowman of Great Britain. Won title by winning local championship and qualifying for entry into the British National Ploughing Match held at Stirling, Scotland, 1932. (His prize was £100 given by the Brit- ish Ploughing Association, the "Esso" National Challenge Trophy, sliver medal given by the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and free trip to Can- ada; given by Esso Petroleum Co Ltd.)
(Leslie's father when he retired from competitions in 1932 had 263 championships to his credit. Les- lie's grandfather and two uncles also won 158 first prizes between them. At matches where Leslie and his brother John (a horse plowman) have both entered they have won the horse and tractor classes 38 times.) Leslie lives in a 12th century farmhouse and is adept at "Tossing the Sheaf" at County sports meetings. His re- cord throw cleared a height of 26 feet with a sheaf of grain weigh- ing 16 pounds. He was in the Home Guard, and likes a game of bowls, darts, billiards and snooker. He has a cousin living in Victoria.
REGINALD A. HOGG
Morton Grange, East Harsley, Northallerton, Yorkshire, Contest- ant, age 42 years. Farms 345 acres (mixed) has 150 breeding ewes and other stock. Has won many plow- ing championships including the British National Match at Stir- ling (same as Leslie Dixon) for horse plowing, but will plow with tractor at World Match here. His 14 year old son represented his school in a local plowing match and won second prize at first attempt. Is fond of riding horses. Used to keep a couple of hunters, was a keen show Jumper, rider to hounds and polnt-to- point steeplechase racer. A rela- tive, E. J, Hogg, lives at R.R. 4, Saldls,.B. 0. WILLIAM MUIRHEAD
Foot o' Green, Stirling, Scotland, Team Manager, age 57 years, farms 220 acres where in 1314 the famous Battle of Bannockburn was fought when the Scots under Robert the Bruce de- feated the English under King Edward the Second. He has won a number of horse plowing com- petitions. His father and grand- father were consistent winners at plowing matches, his grandfather as far back as 1843. He has been secretary of the Bannockburn, Pleane ,and Polmaise Ploughing Society for 25 years. His grand- father was secretary for 40 years and father was for many years the president. Is president of the Stirling Agricultural Show, im- mediate past vice-chairman Of the British Ploughing Association and now a vice-president of the Brit- ish Ploughing Association and ar- ea representative for Scotland. Is past president of, the local and area branches of the National Farmers' Union. is a noted plow- ing match judge and judge of Clydesdale horses. Breeds Clydes- dales, the first foal he ever bred was shipped to Canada as a four- year-old and her granddaughter won the famed Cawder Cup in Glasgow in 1945
Northern Ireland
ROBERT JAMES CARSEKellynure, Carryduft, Co. Down, Contestant, age 35 years. Farms 70 acres (mixed). Was four times champion of Dromara Ploughing Society; five times champion of Drumbo Ploughing Society and four times champion of Seaforde Ploughing Society matches Is the 1953 Northern Ireland Tractor Champion, is a member of the carryduff, Co. Down Ploughing Society. Mr. and Mrs. Carnduff, 384 Rhodes Ave., Toronto, are friends.
Republic Of Ireland
RONALD G. SHEANKTogher, Killbride, Co. Wicklow, Contestant, age 30 years. Operates 120-acre farm (mixed). Won County Wicklow plowing champ- ionship for the four years l950to 1953 and County Wexford Invit- (?)

Killencoole, Readypenny. Dundalk, Co. Louth, Contestant, , age 30 years. Operates 150-acre farm (mixed). His taken part in many plowing matches, placing first in most. Was first in the All Ireland class in 1953; Is member of Coun- ty Louth Ploughing Association. (Ronald Sheane and Thomas McDonnell were the highest scor- ers in a test match in which the 10 top winners at the National Match competed for the champ- ionship titles.)

Is vice-president of' world Championship Ploughing Organi- zation. Appointed team manager By the National Ploughing Assoc- iation of Ireland.
West Germany
ROMAN DONDORFFStuehlingen, (Baden), Contest- ant, age 20 years. Is a farm as- sistant on a 70-acre farm at the foothills of the Black Forest. 1953 champion of Baden in the state plowing competition and champ- ion in the tractor class of the Federal Plowing Match held at Cologne.

Grenzau, (Westerwald) near Coblence, Contestant, age 21 years. Operates a 40-acre farm (mixed). Was 1953 Champion of Rhineland- Palatia in the state plowing match and third in the tractor class in Federal Plowing Match. WALTER FEUERLEIN Ulm/Danube, Team . Manager, age 50 years. Agricultural expert. Is branch head of the Institute for Soil Management, Federal Ag- ricultural Research Centre. Is board member of the World Championship Ploughing Organ- ization. Appointed team manager by the German Land Youth Ser- vice Organization.

Klepp, Jaeren, Contestant, age 41 years. Operates a 200-acre farm (mixed). Has been in contest plowing for four years during which he won four district championships and the Norway Championship. Appointed team manager by the Norwegian Young Farmers' Organization.

Buskerud, Contestant, age 30 years, operates a 200-acre farm (mixed). Placed second in the Norwegian Plowing Championship match.

Eskilstorps gard, Vittskovie, Contestant, age 26 years. Oper- ates a 390-acre farm (mixed). Has been in contest plowing for the past seven years during which he placed third in the Nat- ional Match in 1948, was the win- ner in 1950 and the same year placed fourth in the Scandinav- ian Match held in Denmark. Is president of Young Farmers' Club.

'Vasterlosa, Team Manager, age 33 years. Formerly operated 500- acre farm (mixed) with father. Appointed team manager by Swe- dish Federation of Young Farm- ers' Clubs. Is board member of the World Championship Ploughing Organization. Is secretary of the Swedish Committee for International Farm Youth Exchange. Is officer In Swedish Army. Writes on agriculture for some Swedish newspapers. Recreation is horse racing and car racing.

Fought In Finnish Winter War 1939-40 and World War II in Finland 1941-44. Favorite rec- reation is skiing.
VAINO K. NEUVONEN
Helsinki, Team Manager, age 39. Secretary of Association of Young Farmers Clubs in Finland, sec- retary of Scandinavian 4-H Com- mittee. Member of the W.C.P.O. Board. Had a farm in Carelia, which is now in Russia. Was a lieutenant in the Finnish Army and was wounded in the Finnish Winter War of 1938-40. Served In World War II from 1941-44. Re- creations are skiing and choral singing.
