- Markham Plowman Wins Second Contour Test; School Match Lively
Contour plowing claimed a maj- or Share of attention yesterday at the International Plowing Match- es on the County Home Farm, near Cobourg.
Top awards were taken by E. King of Markham, the course being on the fairly steep hill of the G. Baptist farm. Second place went to C. Thomson of North Gower, and third to R. Marquis of Sunderland. Thomson was a winner the proceeding day.
King, an alert, unmarried far- mer, said that he had done no contour work at his home in Markham where the ground is Flat.
Happy Over Victory
He had no special course in
Contour plowing though he had attended short courses at the Ontario Agricultural College. He is a member of the Unionville Farm Machinery Club.
He was happy about his success in the match and would go in again next year. He did not consider contour work too dif- ficult for the ordinary farmer. No special skill was necessary. The usual type of finish was re- quired as on flat acres the only course difference being in the furrow grounds.
King looked upon contour plowing as good on the sloping land where the advent- ages were manifest. The hill on which the tests were held yes- terday he believed to be to steep, however, for cultivation. Such land should be left in grass.
The lands on which the mat- ches are being held were very good for the purpose, in his opi- nion, though it would be advantageous if the fields used were not so far removed from the central area, where visitors congregated.
