1982 IN REVIEW

Library use in Cobourg and Hamilton Township continues to grow steadily despite a relatively fixed population (43% of the population served). Book and non-print circulation increased to a total of 122,429 items.

Children's programmes drew 2,557 children to the library. Activities included story hours, puppet shows, craft sessions and special seasonal activities.

Our main building dates from the 19th century and was never intended for its present use, but 1982 saw several improvements including the re-shingling of the roof the insulation of the attic, construction of office space for financial records, and the painting and improvement of the second floor meeting hall.

The Library Board participated in the province-wide Public Library Programme Review is represented on a committee of the Ontario Library Trustees' Association sent delegates to the Ontario Library Association conference, and has had close communication with the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture and the Lake Ontario Regional Library System.

Federal grants were obtained for a summer project which gave employment to local students and resulted in the formation of an index for historical Cobourg newspapers to 1905.

1982 has been rewarding in terms both of its accomplishments and the support the Library has received from the public and the Councils of Cobourg and Hamilton Township.
