- Notes
- James Crossen settled in Cobourg in 1852. He was first engaged in the foundry business and in 1870 began to manufacture railway cars. His business soon grew to be the finest in Canada and Cobourg's largest industry employing over 600 persons. The Crossen Car Works had the honour of building and outfitting the railway car that the Marquis of Lorne and Princess Louise travelled across Canada in. In 1854, Crossen married Margaret Hayden, sister of John Hayden. Both were children of Reverend William Hayden, who was instrumental in the development of the Congregational Church in Canada. In 1871, Crossen built an impresssive brick house, he named "Cedar Hedge".
