This, and the other image of the TURRET CHIEF ashore, are after she ran aground on Keweenaw Point in Lake Superior in the Great Storm of 1913. The pictures are probably from the salvage operation which began the following spring and stretched into July.

The captain was reprimanded by the board of inquiry after the event, which gives some insight into the conditions prior to her going ashore: http://images.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/66637/data

There is an account of the salvage at: http://images.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/66633/data

There is a lovely little account of the Turret ships on the Great Lakes at: http://www.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/Documents/Scanner/03/07/default.asp?ID=c011
