Notes
This comment was submitted by a descendant of Harry Leroy Chapin (December 2015): "This is my grandfather, Harry Leroy Chapin. He was the Customs Officer in Colborne in the early 1900's. He was the son of Simeon Chapin and Mary (Reynolds)Chapin and was born 29 Sep 1867 in Colborne and died 27 Jun 1929, Toronto, On. He married Jennie Beatrice Dougherty, daughter of John Dougherty and Jane (Hermiston) Dougherty of Lakeport, On. They had 2 children: Jeanne Grace and John Simeon Chapin. Grace married Middleton Mann Elliott. Except for my father, Middleton Elliott, they are all buried in Lakeport Cemetery. I have enjoyed very much looking through this collection of historical material on Colborne. It is wonderful to see that these things are preserved. I have many great childhood memories of Colborne."

This comment was submitted by a descendant of Harry Leroy Chapin (December 2015): "Correction re John Simeon Chapin - he is not buried in Lakeport Cemetery. He is buried in Sebring, Florida."

A print of this glass negative was found in a photo album entitled Colborne 125th Anniversary Committee. Written on inside front cover of this: Reproductions of glass negatives and positives of Colborne, Ontario's past - early 1900's - belonging to Arnold Warren and the Wm. C. Griffis family. Developed by Wm. Bennett (cousin of Joan & Harold Harnden under the auspices of the 125th Anniversary Committee celebrating Colborne's 125th Birthday 1859-1984. Handwritten on the back of the print: "Customs House King St. Colborne"

The signs read: Money to Loan Low Rates H.L. Chapin Custom House

The photo album was unstable and the prints were removed and are now located in a print storage box.

See the publication - How Firm a Foundation: A History of the Township of Cramahe and the Village of Colborne in Cramahe's Digital Archives (3bk), p. 40 for a reference to Harry Chapin.
