- Description
- An undated newspaper clipping, likely the Colborne Express, which was entitled "Colborne in 1903" included the following comment: "Spring is also stirring in the bosoms of Colborne's businessmen. Miss Merkley came from Ottawa to take in hand the dressmaking department at the Scougale Brothers. Miss Crosby did the same for the millinery department. Miss Culver, Colborne's only business woman, had her establishment in high gear turning out breathtaking creations in ladies' hats. Her spring display "was a exposition of millinery richness, elegance and beauty, the like of which has never been seen in Colborne." One really pretty hat, that will attract attention, is a conceit, large, with a decided glare. It is trimmed with spangled sequins and drooping feathers at the sides; the crown is a soft meline, with pretty bows of black velvet on top, lying flat." Any ray of spring sunshine not deflected by that hat work be caught by the silk, parasol, that no well-dressed lady would be seen without." This article also included an image of 213ph - its newspaper caption read: "Colborne ladies, displaying Miss Culver's hats at the G.T.R. station."
This newspaper clipping was found in a 1970s photo album. - Notes
